How a Cheeseburger Changed My Career
Even though John Barker’s exposure to the family restaurant business at a very young age gave him a small taste of the world of hospitality, it was the charm and honesty he saw in the patriarch of a fast food juggernaut that drew him from the sphere of the financial world to the world of restaurants.
A meeting with the legendary Dave Thomas of Wendy’s convinced John that he had to work for this dynamic company. During his twenty-year tenure there, he had opportunities to work in many aspects of the company as well as join Dave’s passion for fixing problems associated with adoption and foster care with the establishment of The DAVE THOMAS FOUNDATION FOR ADOPTION.
The restaurant business can and does get under our skin. It can push us out of the way like a rude relative or capture our imagination and energy in a way that drives us to create, investigate and perceive the business in many new and different ways. John’s analytic nature has found a good home as president and CEO of the Ohio Restaurant Association. Besides working with restauranteurs all over the state he still finds time to lecture at the Fisher College of Business at The Ohio State University.
